'TRL' and the 2000s in a nutshell.

Today is the day! Are you ready for Total Ariana Live tonight at 7 p.m. on MTV? We definitely are. Not only is there going to be a stripped-down version of "Problem" (which I haven't been able to get out of my head all summer FYI), we'll also hear a brand new song from the pint-size powerhouse: "Break Free." What's more is that we're totally stoked about TRL coming back! (Or this ~Ariana~ version of it, at least.) You know TRL, the decade-long mainstay that invited the biggest celebrities and performers straight into your living room? Years before Belieber Fever swept the nation or 5 Seconds of Summer penned their ode to skivvies, and when Miley was living a double life as Hannah Montana.
Because we're feeling nostalgic, we gathered a collection of photos from some of our favorite style moments (most of these are from the Carson Daly years, because he's the prince of TRL).
COORDINATED COUPLES
Jay and Bey in 2002; Nick and Jessica in 2000

While Justin and Britney might have pioneered the look, they weren't the only couple's matching. Jay Z and Beyonce were double-denim mirror images of each other years before they actually became a couple. Sometimes you're just on the same wavelength, you know? Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey also wore matching black tees and leather pants.

Honorable mention goes to Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daly.
HOUSE OF DEREON
Destiny's Child, 2001

God bless the person who gave Tina Knowles a sewing machine. The Destiny's Child matriarch was responsible for some of the girl group's most standout outfits. My personal favorite is this colbalt blue "Rhinestone Rodeo" look that Mrs. Knowles whipped up for the threesome.
DIRRTY POPSTARS
Britney in 2003; Xtina in 2002

While Britney was flirting with a myriad of looks in the early 2000s, Christina (or rather, Xtina) was simply "Dirrty." Despite the ideological turf war between the two, the truth of the matter is both were talented young women who weren't afraid to show a lot of midriff and/or their underwear.
RISE OF THE BOY BANDS

I don't think it gets more early 2000s than 3/5 of *NSync wearing chunky ribbed turtlenecks and icy pendants.

If *NSync's heavy knitwear, leather, and denim is giving you hot flashes on this July day, may I present this picture of summer-ready BSB? Let's all pour a little out for linen sport coats and sandblasted jeans, tattoo-inspired tees, and Kevin's Zorro facial hair.

GAGA GRACE JONES
Lady Gaga, 2008

Years before Lady Gaga decided to wear a meat dress, dress in drag, or travel by egg, she made an early appearance on TRL in a hooded leotard. And to think that at one point, we all thought that this was the craziest outfit that we'd ever see Lady Gaga wear. It's hard to believe we were so young and innocent back then.
