The year of Lupita keeps rolling on with this delightful short from Vogue. The Oscar-winning actress and MTV Style Dreamgirl reveals that after a particularly disheartening trip to New York, she found herself "morbidly disappointed" with the braids she received in an African salon there. The botched job inspired Lupita to ask an aunt of hers back home in Kenya to teach her to cornrow, box braid, and twist—skills she still practices to this day!
The actress credits the styling process with keeping her awake in class as an undergrad at Amherst's Hampshire College and later on at the Yale School of Drama. Furthermore, it allowed her to connect with and create viable, sustained relationships with friends. She originally thought braiding was going to be her "side hustle" at school, but she didn't have the heart to charge her newfound friends. Like, could you BE a sweeter person? No, you could not. Also, reason #97836472856349825 for why I want to be best friends with Lupita.

Lupita views the craft as another form of storytelling, and that a jacked up 'do affects the whole frame. I don't know about y'all but I am seriously entertaining some major sleepover fantasies right now. Lupita, come over! You can show me how to braid, and I'll order in snacks while we argue over what to watch on Netflix. Get ready to fall deeper in love with the newest face of Lancome.
